Benefits
  • You can still cross your thumb under for a scaleA thumb splint locks the joint in place, so you can't cross under for a scale in it. This holds the joint and leaves your thumb free, so you keep the full reach a piece needs.
  • Your fingertips stay free to feel the keysNothing covers the pads of your fingers. You keep the same touch and control over dynamics you had before. Most gear covers the hand, which dulls that touch.
  • Built for the same reach, bar after barMost thumb supports were made for a sports injury or recovery after surgery, when the hand is resting. This one was made for a hand with a whole piece left to play.
  • Nobody at the recital notices itIt's soft and thin, not a bulky splint. It sits flat under your sleeve at the bench.
  • You get a pairOne left, one right, in every order. Wear one or wear both.

Finding your size

It takes a minute, and you only measure once.

1. Measure. Wrap a soft tape measure around your palm at its widest point, just below the knuckles, with your thumb relaxed out to the side. No tape measure? A strip of paper or a piece of string works just as well. Wrap it around, mark where it meets, then hold it against a ruler.

Measure your dominant hand, or whichever one is wider. Each order includes a left and a right, so one size covers the pair.

2. Read. Keep it snug but not tight, and note the measurement.

3. Match. Find your number below.

Small7 to 7.5 inches  (18 to 19 cm)
Medium7.5 to 8.5 inches  (19 to 21.5 cm)
Large8.5 to 9 inches  (21.5 to 23 cm)

On the border between two sizes? Take the smaller one. A snug fit at the base of the thumb gives the best support, and the fabric gives a little as it settles in.

Is thumb pain keeping you off the bench?

The Thumb Stabilizer holds steady for over 11,000 piano players and other people who were told to use their hands less.

Morning stiffness

The first squeeze of the day is always the worst one. The joint has to shift and swell before it settles into anything close to normal.

A joint that won't hold still

The ligaments at the base of your thumb have stretched out. Every squeeze lets the joint shift a little further than it should.

Swelling after a full day

Your body swells the joint to protect it. That swelling is why the next squeeze hurts more than the last one did.

Hold the joint. Keep playing.

Not a thumb splint. Not a wrist cushion. One firm pad, over the one joint that gives out.

Stops the click

Holds the one joint steady, without locking your whole thumb the way a rigid splint does.

Eases in 2 to 3 weeks

Most people feel it ease over the first two to three weeks of wearing it while they work, not while they rest.

Built to last the day

Made for hours of repeated small movements, not for resting an injury for one afternoon.

I rested it for three weeks. Then I picked up my needles and lasted nine minutes. This is the first thing that held while I was knitting, not after. I finished the cardigan that sat in the basket since November.

I garden four days a week and my thumb was done by lunch. This fits under my glove. Nobody notices it and I have not had to stop early since.

I play in a covers band on weekends. My fretting thumb gave out after twenty minutes. This is the first support that lets me barre a chord. Not rigid, not bulky, and the joint stays put.

I used to shake my hand out between every hole by the back nine. Last Tuesday I played all eighteen holes and did not set my club down once.

My orthopedist gave me six minutes and told me to find a different hobby. He never asked how I hold my needles. I wear this every evening now and I have not canceled one.

I play three matches most Saturdays in the summer heat, and I sweat through everything. This stayed put through all three and my hand felt normal walking to the car.

I had a padded steering wheel cover and driving gloves before this, and neither one stopped the click when I turned into a spot. This did, the first week I wore it. I parallel parked in one try last Tuesday.

My daughter bought me a compression glove last Christmas and I never told her it did not help. This one does. I picked my granddaughter up off the floor last week without thinking about my hand first.

My hand used to give out halfway through anything with octaves. Last week I played the whole piece without shaking my hand out once. My piano group noticed before I said a word.

I wrung out a dishcloth without stopping for the first time in two years. My husband noticed before I said anything.

Questions piano players ask first.

Will this get in the way when I reach for an octave or cross my thumb under for a scale?

This is the first thing most piano players ask, and it's the right question. This is soft and slim, not rigid. It supports the joint at the base of your thumb without locking the thumb itself.

Does it limit finger independence, that separation between fingers a piece needs for phrasing?

No. Your four fingers stay completely free and move the way they did before. The support sits only over the joint at the base of your thumb.

Will I still feel the keys, or does this dull my touch?

Your fingertips stay bare. Nothing covers the pads of your fingers or the tip of your thumb, so you keep the same touch and control over dynamics.

I already tried a thumb splint. How is this different?

A splint locks your thumb so it can rest. This holds the one joint that slides and leaves the rest of your hand free to move. Same goal. Opposite method.

How long before I notice something?

Some people feel steadier the first time they put it on. For most, the ache from a piece with a lot of octaves eases over the first two to three weeks of wearing it regularly.
